How to Play a Trading Card Game Online With Friends (No Download)

Playing a trading card game with a friend who lives across the country used to mean mailing proxies or crowding around a webcam. Today you have a better option: a virtual tabletop you both open in a browser. Here is how it works and how to start a game in minutes.

What is a virtual tabletop?

A virtual tabletop is a shared digital board that shows both players the same game state. It does not play the game for you — it gives you the tools (draw, play, tap, move to the graveyard, track life) and lets you run the rules yourselves, exactly like sitting across a real table. That “manual” design is a feature: it works for any deck, any format, and any house rule, because the software never says no.

The three ways to play online with friends

• A browser virtual tabletop (easiest) — Open a page, pick a deck, share a link. Zero install. Best for a quick game with one friend. This is what Infinite Ambition does.
• A desktop client like Cockatrice — More powerful and customizable, but both players download and configure it first. Better for recurring playgroups.
• Tabletop Simulator — A paid Steam sandbox where you can play literally any tabletop game with full physics. Great, but it is not free and not instant.

Start a game in four steps

1. Open the table in your browser. 2. Choose a deck — good games ship ready-made decks so you skip deckbuilding. 3. Create the table; you get a short code and an invite link. 4. Send the link to your friend. They open it, pick their deck, and take the open seat automatically. From there you draw, play, and resolve combat together, tracking life with the on-screen counters.

That is the entire flow in Infinite Ambition: pick one of five 40-card decks, create a table, copy the invite link. The board syncs live, your opponent’s hand stays hidden, and everything else is in your hands — the way a good game of cards should be.
